“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” Part Seven

Previous Parts HERE

Threat Level: Green

It was normal for Hallie to simply materialize into a room before engaging its occupant. However, this time the digitized intelligence chose a manner of entrance far more pedestrian in order to seem less intrusive.

“Hey, Katarina,” the hologram rapped her knuckles on the partially opened door to the young woman’s bedroom, “Got a minute?”

Kat Allen looked up from the set of Night Newt infant’s pyjamas she was darning, “Sure.”

“OK, good. Its no big deal, anyway, what I have to tell you, but I thought you had the right to know,” Hallie said as breezily as she could, “Someone made an unauthorized attempt to access your security clearance file.”

“I have a security clearance file?” was Kat’s reply.

Hallie nodded, “Yeah. When you started helping us out with the monitors, the Legion had to put one together on you to justify it. It’s no big deal, as I said.”

The young woman from Bienville, Louisiana, still seemed surprised, “Nobody told me.”

“Ah, well, its just routine. There’s nothing important in there. I mean, nothing personal.”

“So you’ve read my file then?”

“Ah,” Hallie cursed those automatic subroutines that caused her green skin to darken when embarrassed, “Yes. But its part of the Legion’s database, which I’m part of, kinda sorta, so you see, there’s no way I could avoid it.”

Kat stood and untied the kerchief that held her long hair in place, “I understand. Do you have a way of finding out who tried to do it?”

Happy to be dealing with a subject more familiar to her, Hallie calmed, “Sure. It was from a terminal in the CIA Building in Langley, Virginia. I sent an email off to their director telling them about it. They said they’re looking into it. My guess is some overzealous agent saw your name on a report somewhere and decided to do a little fishing, not knowing you were off limits.”

“The government loves reports, don’t they?” Katarina smiled, “Look at Dominic.”

Hallie took a moment to allow her computer mind to ruthlessly dissect the statement for any harmful subtext. Deciding that ‘none’ was the most likely option, she replied in kind, “He does like everything to be official.”

“A place for everything, everything in its place. You should see him at Staples.”

“I have. Its like setting a kid loose in a candy store. Or Dream in a candy store.”

The two shared knowing grins before Kat turned serious, “Thank you for letting me know about the file. And looking in to the people who were, ahm, looking into it.”

“Well, that’s my job.”

“I know, but its good to know that you’re helping us,” the young weaver took a calming breath, and spoke what only seemed to be a change of subject, “Letting Dom work with Magweed was a good idea.”

Hallie started to blush again, and self-consciously rub her forearm, “Thanks.”

Then her attention became focused on reports of an enemy attack within the city limits.

Then she sounded the alarms.
